Image Quality

With true 4K resolution, a DLP display, and support for HDR and HLG technologies, you get immersive images with brilliant colors. A 1,800,000:1 contrast ratio ensures crisp images, and the 3,000 lumens rating allows you to use the projector without dimming the lights. The projector also comes with Optoma’s Color Management System. You can adjust the color settings to get the right nuance for almost any image.

Movie lovers will appreciate the ISF picture modes. It lets you calibrate image quality for the day or night. A high refresh rate keeps live-action sports playing smoothly. It’s also adjustable to match the slower frame rate of classic movies.

Gaming Quality

The D2 boasts a fast 240Hz refresh rate and low input lag that will keep any type of game running smoothly. Gamers that want to enjoy 4K content will have a slower input lag of around 30ms. It’s still fast enough for most gaming consoles, but online game players may notice some delays. Players that don’t mind dropping to full HD resolution can enjoy a faster 4ms latency speed.

Pros

  • Immersive 4K images
  • Short-throw distance
  • Voice-controlled enabled
  • 3D support
  • Can cast images without a projector screen

Cons

  • The projector is bulky and can make installation in some areas difficult
  • It does not support hands-free voice-control

Ease of Installation and Setup

Its flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of the D2. Thanks to the bright laser light source, you can set the projector up in almost any space. Even if the room has ambient light, you still get a bright, vivid picture.

The projector works with screen sizes ranging from 85” up to 120”. Its short-throw distance of around 2’ lets you set the projector up almost anywhere. Rooms with odd layouts aren’t a problem. The D2 comes with 3×3 anti-wrapping technology. It allows you to cast images on curved surfaces. With the addition of the six Wall Color Adjustment functions, you don’t have to use a screen to cast immersive images. Check the comparison versus the predecessor, Optoma P2.

Included Smart Features

The D2 is advertised as a smart projector which means it comes with some cool functions. A voice-enabled remote not only controls the projector but can also be integrated with compatible smart entertainment devices. Want to watch content from Netflix, Prime Video, or other compatible streaming services? The projector comes with an onboard Hako mini-player. You can stream content directly to the projector.

Support for IFTTT connectivity adds to the ease of control. Anyone with an Echo speaker can also use Alexa to control the projector.

Consumer Impressions

Consumer reviews are mixed about the D2 projector. Most agree that the image quality is exceptional. There are complaints about the setup. The projector is a little on the large side at 15 x 22.1 x 5.1 inches. It also weighs a little over 18 lbs. Consumers appreciate the support for eARC, along with the integrated dual 10-watt speakers.

Conclusion

There’s a lot to like about the Optoma CinemaX D2 projector (>>> Check current price on Bhphotovideo). It produces stunning images in almost any space, even if you don’t have a projector screen. The low input lag will make gamers happy, and it’s easy to integrate with your other smart devices. However, the D2 does come at a higher price point than some comparable models. It’s something to consider before you make a purchasing decision.
