Set-up and Installation

The Optoma UHZ45 has a standard throw lens with a similar throw distance as many lamp-based projectors. You will need at least 4 feet between the lens and the screen to get a clear image.

It can easily be mounted by yourself with physical dimensions of 13.27 x 10.4 x 4.7 inches (including feet). It is also only 10.58 pounds. The projector was designed to be installed in one of four possible positions: table mount front, table mount rear, ceiling mount front, and ceiling mount rear. Any of these options is perfectly fine as long as you allow for at least 30 cm clearance around the exhaust vent.

Aside from its dimensions and weight, the Optoma UHZ45 is easy to set up. First, set up the remote by inserting the AAA batteries into the battery compartment. Power on the projector. Select an input source from the three HDR-enabled HDMI ports (to reduce response time to 4ms while gaming be sure to use HDMI Port 1). Then, check or adjust your image settings. There are several modes, such as Cinema/Film, HDR, HLG, HDR SIM, Game, and 3D. To get the image in just the right spot, you can use the optical zoom lens (to get the image size just right) and a vertical lens shift (to move the picture up or down). There’s also a digital system for keystone correction. Basically, there is no excuse for not having a distortion-free projection!

Last, you can easily set-up the built-in speakers. There is no need to buy costly external speakers!

Ease of Use

Though it’s advertised mainly to gaming nerds or high-class businessmen, don’t expect the usability to be cryptic or difficult. The average layman could absolutely set up and use this system with ease. For example, the menu layout and the remote are intuitive, modern, and practical.

You can even turn it into a smart projector by connecting an HDMI dongle like the Google Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, or Roku stick.

Can gamers use the Optoma UHZ45?

The input lag of the Optoma UHZ45 is around 4ms in Enhanced Gaming Mode (1080p). Competitive gamers prefer an input lag lower than 5ms, so this is well within the acceptable range for most gamers, even for those who play high-speed, multi-player, and graphic intensive games.

The Bottom Line

The Optoma UHZ45 isn’t for everyone, but it is the best of both worlds (>>> Check current price on Bhphotovideo). It is the best if your needs switch between gaming, films, and business, or some combination of these. In this regard, it is arguably the best projector you can buy for the price. If you are not a gamer or streamer or businessman, you might consider a model that costs half as much with less quality or functionality.
